Hello Lauren Rolwing

Outline Agency

We're over the moon to announce a new signing - Nashville-based Lauren Rolwing.

Lauren’s style is bold, reductive yet stylish and she cites a broad range of influences on her work – from the work of designers Paul Rand, Bruno Munari, Ikko Tanaka, and children’s illustrator Kveta Pacovská, to the 80s ads of San Franciscan clothing company Esprit, the clothes of Comme des Garçon and Issey Miyake, the humour, patterns and colour of the work of Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsass, and beyond to the films of Fellini, Bergman and Jacques Tati.

Using geometric forms, beautiful curves and bold colours, Lauren creates powerfully graphic, eye-popping illustrations free of superfluous detail for clients that include Unilever, The New York Times, Adidas, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Colette, Pearson, Brummell, Frieze, Wall Street Journal and Refinery29.

Kristjana S Williams' Original Artworks for The Affordable Art Fair

Outline Agency

This week, Kristjana S Williams will be showcasing several new one off 3D artworks at our sister gallery Outline Editions' stand at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea Park. Here's a sneak peek at some work-in-progress shots and details from the new pieces...

Williams’ beautiful collages are made up of hours of intensive work, layering hundreds and often thousands of scanned 18th century engravings, photographs, paintings and drawings, and juxtaposing them with contemporary illustration and colouring to create a bold, contemporary aesthetic.

Williams has recently completed projects for clients including the Connaught Hotel, The V&A, and The Shard among others.

The Affordable Art Fair runs from 10-13 March where you can visit the Outline Editions stand (G3) to see Kristjana's new work in the flesh.

Hvass&Hannibal's first two books for Wide Eyed Editions have just been published. Both books, Technicolour Treasure Hunt and Pattern-tastic Treasure Hunt, are 14-page board books aimed at pre-school children and feature chunky tabs to help readers turn the pages.

Technicolour takes young readers on a colourful counting adventure...

And Pattern-tastic asks its readers to name the wildlife on each of its pages – and also spot the odd one out too.

Both books (each priced at £9.99) are available from today from Wide Eyed Editions.

Virginie Morgand for London Transport Museum

Outline Agency

The London Transport Museum commissioned Virginie Morgand to create four new illustrated posters for its Brightest London campaign. Each of the posters depict Londoners enjoying a colourful night out at various locations and the set of four posters can be seen to describe a rather good night out, starting with a drink in a bar...

...then going to a nice restaurant for dinner...

...before heading to the cinema for a screening event...

...and ending up dancing the night away!

Look out for the posters which are up in various underground stations around London. And check out LTM's shop site where you can buy the posters for £9.95 each. Virginie will also be signing limited edition giclée prints of each of the illustrations at London Transport Museum on the evening of Friday 12th February, between 6 and 9pm.

Virginie Morgand et L'Instant Parisien

Outline Agency

Created by the team behind a blog of the same name, L’Instant Parisien is a new bi-lingual (French and English), bi-annual publication that will “present a collection of moments, chronicles of Parisian lives.” A campaign to crowdfund the printing of the inaugural issue is currently running on kisskissbankbank.com and Virginie Morgand has not only created the cover artwork for the issue (shown above), but has worked with the magazine to create various rewards for people who support the campaign.

These include a set of three greetings cards all sporting Parisian café scenes by Virginie. There’s also a two-colour screen printed cotton tote bag, a rather lovely A5 128 page notebook sporting front and back cover illustrations by Virginie, plus a 50x70cm screenprint of Virginie’s cover artwork (limited edition of 100) individually numbered and signed for those donating €150 or more.

Help support the magazine’s first issue here, and view Virginie's updated portfolio here.

Kristjana S Williams for Fortnum & Mason

Outline Agency

We're chuffed to bits to showcase the fruits of a wonderful, multi-faceted collaboration between Kristjana S Williams and one of London's most famous and iconic stores: Fortnum & Mason on Piccadilly.

It all began about a year ago when Kristjana started working with design agency Design Bridge on a huge packaging project for Fortnums. Now a whopping 107 products in the store's Christmas collection sport the fruit of this illustrative collaboration – from jam and marmalade jars through to biscuit tins and advent calendars.

As well as adorning the store's festive product packaging, Kristjana's illustration style is also on display in Fortnum's 21 festive window displays – each of which takes a key motif from her work and sees it transformed into three-dimensional, dreamlike scenes which happen to feature no less than 300 owls, roosters and macaws adorned with gems, headdresses and crowns.

And that's not all Kristjana has been up to with Fortnum's this year. She has also collaborated with the store to create an exclusive ceramics collection featuring yet more of her festive illustration work:

The ceramics collection includes teapot, teacups and saucers, plates and mugs. You can peruse the range at www.fortnumandmason.com.

Virginie Morgand's new campaign for Le Meridien

Outline Agency

lemeridien.jpg

Commissioned by creative agency Winkreative, Virginie Morgand has created a series of eight illustrated ads for international hotel group Le Méridien. Devised to pay homage to a golden age of mid-century European travel and tourism posters whilst appealing to the creative and curious-minded traveller, each of the ads in the campaign features a character engaged in an activity in a particular location indicated by his or her surroundings.

Shown above is the first of the ads to appear - a double page ad showing a happy cyclist zooming along atop the Arc de Triomphe with the strapline “Find something you weren’t looking for”. This and the next seven ads in the campaign will roll out globally across print and digital media over the next few months.

Le Méridien will feature the ad images on LeMeridien.com, and across all of the brand's social media platforms this summer. Rest assured we’ll be retweeting!

Outline Artists showcase at McCann London

Outline Agency

The good folk at London ad agency McCann invited us to take over their café space for a few weeks with a selection of illustrated works that could inspire and inform all that work at the agency. "Of course," we said. As well as installing the above showcase of framed works by our artists, we also gave the phenomenallly enormous notice board on the opposite wall of the café the Outline Artists treatment too:

The exhibition is on until Thursday 18 June at McCann, 7-11 Herbrand Street, London WC1N 1EX.

The Lion & The Fox by Andreas Neophytou

Outline Agency

No, Andreas Neophytou hasn't re-written Aesop's comedy of manners, The Lion & The Fox. He has, however, created the graphic identity for a new salon and photography gallery named after the short story. The identity takes the form of a logotype and monogram – with each letter and a flowing ampersand crafted by Andreas himself – plus a patterned colour palette.

"Given that the salon's derives from one of Aesop’s fables, storytelling felt like a good place to start," explains Andreas of his approach. "I referenced the graphic design of book covers during the 50s, to create a strong aesthetic link to the design direction of the store interior which has a distinct mid-century influence," he continues.

"This period of design can be characterised by loose hand-made graphics as popularised by legendary designers Paul Rand and Alvin Lustig. Playful shapes were often complimented with sharp, engineered typefaces such as slab serifs."

"I drew a thin, wavy ampersand to tie the four initials together. It’s not quite a hairline stroke but feels like a strand of hair. The slab serifs are from a font I designed, inspired by Roberto Aloi's Essempi series on contemporary Italian design that ran from the 1930s to the 1960s. The patterns were created by cutting simple shapes out of paper."

Kristjana S Williams' Wonder Garden

Outline Agency

We’re excited to reveal a first look at the book Kristjana S Williams has been working on with Jenny Broom at Wide Eyed Editions. Entitled The Wonder Garden, the book explores five of planet Earth’s most extraordinary habitats and the creatures that live in them – each brought to life with Kristjana’s illustration.

Trek through the Amazon rainforest, travel to the Chihuahuan Desert, dive in the Great Barrier Reef, delve deep into the Black Forest and stand on the roof of the world – the Himalayan Mountains – to see nature at its (illustrated) wildest.

The Wonder Garden (£20) will be published by Wide Eyed Editions later this year.

Rob Bailey: New work for Transport For London

Outline Agency

M&C Saatchi has been working with Outline Artists’ Rob Bailey for several months on a series of vibrant illustrated posters for Transport for London. Each poster in the campaign is designed to inform Londoners about fares and ticketing  to ensure they get the most out of using Transport for London’s network.

The campaign is now live across billboards, press, digital display and digital outdoor, with each poster communicating a piece of helpful information relating to off-peak travel, contactless card payment, Oyster card refunds, daily fare capping and how to claim refunds on delayed journeys.

"Distilling each message down and using the simplicity of Rob Bailey’s illustrations enables us to deliver complex information in a clear and succinct way,” says M&C Saatchi’s Head of Art, Grant Parker. “By using a limited colour palette, we were able to keep the work graphically clean and uncluttered.”

New signing: Matt Chase

Outline Agency

Matt Chase news blog copy.jpg

We’re super-excited to announce our latest signing: Washington DC-based illustrator, Matt Chase. Since graduating, Matt held a three-year post at design agency Design Army before opening the doors of his own independent designer and illustration practice. What we love about Matt is his knack for turning even the simplest ideas into beautiful, cerebral illustrated compositions. His work embraces different mediums and formats – and while he’s capable of producing imagery to brief in almost any style you can imagine, it’s his bold graphic illustration combined with his ability to convey concepts and narratives succinctly (with bundles of wit and charm) that we really love.

Matt's work has garnered accolades from AIGA, Communication Arts, The Art Director’s Club of New York and the Society of Publication Design. Clients include The New York Times, Esquire, Penguin Books, The Washington Post, SHOP Magazine, Herb Lester Associates, Fast Company, Vanity Fair, and Wired UK.
